The BSAT Department is home to the Management Information Systems (MIS) major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. MIS is a field that combines analytic, technology and people skills. MIS majors are expected not only to become expert in applying technology to solve business problems but also to develop the business knowledge and communication skills necessary to manage strategy development and lead organizations.
Students considering MIS should have a strong background in the math/science disciplines from high school. MIS is a rigorous program for disciplined students. University students considering a transfer into MIS should have at least a B average or a particularly strong technical background. They should have an interest in developing both interpersonal and technical skills.
Career Opportunities
Entry level positions and career paths are diverse for students majoring in MIS. Graduates may start their careers as analysts or programmers, database administrators, data-center workers, information system supervisor's, telecommunications project developers, small business system supervisors, local-area network operators, and Webmasters.
These career paths can lead to positions such as Project or System Managers, Management Information Systems (MIS) Managers, Managers of Technical Sales/Support, Systems Development Managers, Senior Systems Analysts, Systems Consultants, Vice Presidents for Information Systems, Presidents, Chief Information Officers (CIOs), or Chief Executive Officers (CEOs).
Companies competing in today's global market demand technology expertise. The future of these businesses will be dictated by information technology skills. Management Information Systems graduates are in high demand as a result of this need.
Curriculum
The MIS curriculum includes technical courses such as programming, database administration and networking. It also stresses business and communications skills in the context of business analysis and processes. The focus of the curriculum is producing graduates immediately able to add value to businesses.
