UL Lafayette provides an opportunity to acquire the education and experience necessary to become a successful manager. From the time students enter the management program until the time they graduate, the main focus of the department is on the student. Whether one aspires to be a manager in a multinational corporation or the owner of a business, the Department of Management can help prepare the student for the exciting challenges that lie ahead. If the world of business is in your future, we proudly invite you to see what we have to offer.

Career Opportunities

Managers are the cornerstones of all organizations. On a day-to-day basis, managers ensure that the tasks are completed and goals are met. On a broader basis, they make the key decisions that keep organizations running and competitive. Managers not only have influence on the organizations for which they work, but ultimately influence our quality of life. Few other jobs allow a person to have as great an impact on other people. The manager’s job is truly challenging. Very few, however, are born with the abilities necessary to perform a manager’s job. Instead, the skills needed by managers are acquired through education and experience.

Faculty

The faculty in the Department of Management are quite diverse, with interests in many different areas and degrees from some of the most prestigious academic institutions. Professors actively participate in many professional and honorary societies and regularly contribute to scholarly journals. To enrich the student’s educational experience, innovative research conducted by the faculty is shared in the classroom. Faculty members are also professionally involved with government, local and national business leaders, ensuring that management students get an important in-depth exposure to the complexities and dynamics of the modern business world.

The Department’s professors, however, are first and foremost, teachers. They are committed to ensuring that students become not only familiar, but also proficient, with the tools and techniques needed as future managers.

The Learning Environment

Despite the uniqueness of each student and faculty member in the Department, Management majors share a common goal: a high quality educational experience that is challenging and full of opportunities for achievement.

The Classes

Enrollment in management classes is limited so students may benefit not only from the coursework, but also from personal interaction with the faculty. This encourages participation and involvement in the classroom, and allows students to share their experiences as well.

Student Organizations

Management students are afforded opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills outside the classroom. The Department of Management and the College of Business Administration sponsor several student organizations and honor societies designed to supplement course studies and provide social interaction with peers and faculty advisors. Presentations by business leaders at organization meetings offer the student opportunity to make contacts and network with future employers.

Facilities

Students in the Department are encouraged to take advantage of the College of Business Administration’s computer facilities which include over 100 personal computers and management related software. Although information processing is an important aspect of management training, computers are viewed as management aids and not as an alternative to the art of human decision-making.

Courses

The department offers majors in general management and Professional Resource and Land Management (PRLM). More than twenty courses are offered in the management major as well as courses that provide introduction to related disciplines such as marketing, finance, economics, and accounting.

Special Study Opportunities

A combination of theoretical classroom study and practical, real-world experience enhance the College of Business Administration’s and the Department of Management’s effectiveness. Students can participate in a variety of programs, such as internships, independent studies, or UL Lafayette’s summer seminars in France.
