Internship Programs


Objective

The primary objective of the College of Business Administration Internship Program is to provide meaningful on-the-job experience for students in a career-related field.


Requirements

To be eligible for the Business Internship Program, a student must:


1. Be enrolled in a major program of study in the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. These programs include:

  • Accounting
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Insurance and Risk Management
  • Management
  • Professional Land Resource Management
  • Business Systems, Analysis, and Technology (Management Information Systems)
  • Business Administration
  • Marketing

2. Have a minimum adjusted GPA of 2.5

3. Be classified as at least a Junior with Upper Division status in the College of Business Administration

4. Get approval from the Internship Advisor and the Internship Coordinator

5. Receive a salary of at least minimum wage.

 

Responsibilities

Once an internship is established, there are documents that must be signed listing the student's, the organization's, and the University's responsibilities.


The Student

 

A student who has established an internship will represent both the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the College of Business Administration. Because of this the student is expected to adhere to the following guidelines. Failure to abide by these guidelines may result in immediate termination of the student's internship.

  • The student must follow the administrative policies of the participating organization.
  • The student must follow the dress code required by the participating organization.
  • The student is responsible for his or her own transportation.
  • The student must be punctual.
  • The student may not submit any material relating to the internship experience for publication without prior written approval from the participating organization.
  • The student must hold all privileged information concerning the operations of the participating organization or its customers in confidence.

The Organization

  • The organization shall provide a planned, supervised program of business experiences for the student.
  • The organization shall maintain such paperwork required by the University to perform evaluations of the student.
  • The organization may request that the University withdraw from its facilities any student whose personal characteristics or performance prevent desirable relationships within the organization.
  • The organization shall, on reasonable request, permit the inspection of its facilities, services available for practice experience, student records, and other items pertaining to the Internship Program. The inspection may be conducted by the University, agencies, or both, charged with the responsibility for accreditation of the academic program.
  • The organization cannot take commercial advantage of its affiliation with the University by advertising the relationship in commercial media.
  • The organization must pay the student at least the prevailing minimum wage.
  • The organization must provide a minimum of 150 hours of work experience. There should be no work during the first week of the semester nor during Final Examinations except by mutual consent.

The University

  • The college will designate a faculty member to direct the program. This includes the monitoring and assignment to the business of eligible students.
  • The college may contact the organization by telephone or in writing prior to the beginning of each training period to arrange tentative assignments.
  • The Internship Director and/or designated faculty member may contact the organization periodically to monitor the student's progress and the continuing development of the program.

Benefits

 

The Student

  • Eases the transition from the classroom to the work world.
  • Provides a record of work experience which should help in securing employment upon graduation.
  • Helps develop a personal work ethic.
  • Supplements college financing.
  • Allows three semester hours of credit per enrollment period (limit of six hours total).

The Organization

  • Although the Internship Program is designed to benefit the University of Louisiana at Lafayette students, the business community benefits as well. The Internship Program provides participating organizations with a pool of high-quality, potential employees.
  • Provides an opportunity for these organizations to assess the actual performance of potential employees at minimal cost and risk. The program provides qualified part-time help that can supplement the organization's regular work force.
  • The Internship Program also establishes a link between the organization and the University for future academic interaction.
  • Many of the organizations that participate in the program get satisfaction from helping to develop tomorrow's business leaders.
